Counting on the Marsh: A Nighttime Book of Numbers was inspired by the convergence and commingling of several factors: a newspaper article that examined the marsh’s delicate natural balance, a collection of Scherenschnitte (German cut-paper art), the artist’s experience with concept books working as an educator, and his having been reared in northwest Indiana marshland. It celebrates the purpose and interrelationships of the various creatures of the marsh—from the dramatic to the humble—through beauty and whimsy.
